In a crowded room on the 9th floor of the Arab World’s Institute in Paris, we can hear Antoine Godeau’s hammer suddenly hitting the desk: “sold for €12.000!”.
On Monday 21 January, 66 works of art were given by artists from the Arab World for Syria and 60% of them were sold in the friendly atmosphere of the charity auction sale. Founder of the Syriart project José Garçon opened and co-hosted the event with very touching words, introducing each artist as a symbol of freedom as they relieve a little bit of pain through their art.
A contest between an american buyer on the phone and a woman in the assembly leads to the higher price spent that night: two women bodies covered with amazingly detailed ink drawings, an extraordinary photograph by Yasmina Alaoui and Marco Guerra.
Syriart -“101 oeuvres pour la Syrie”- raised €110.000, amount that will be sent to 3 charity foundations for civilian victims in Syria.
